Numerical modeling of stress-dependent permeability

ثبت نشده
چکیده

In this paper, conceptual models are presented to identify the effects of solid deformation on the changes in rock permeabilities for (a) fractured media, (b) intact media, and (c) fractured porous media subjected to external loads, all in steady state conditions. Finite element schemes are then developed with embedded correlations between induced strain and modified permeability to simulate the coupled flow-deformation behavior of reservior rocks tested in the laboratory. Rock specimen permeability is evaluated through comparison between analytical solution and numerical calculation using 'geometric factors'; the latter simulates the actual laboratory experiment where fluid flow and mechanical loading are applied simultaneously on rock samples. Numerical analyses reveal that physical properties of the porous media, including permeability, are significantly altered by mechanical effects, particularly if the media is naturally fractured.

Relationship between fracture dip angle, aperture and fluid flow in the fractured rock masses

Most of the Earth's crust contains fluids, and fractures are common throughout the upper part. They exist at a wide range of scales from micro-fractures within grains to major faults and shear zones that traverse the crust. In this paper, the stress-dependent permeability in fractured rock masses have been investigated considering the effects of nonlinear normal deformation and shear dilation o...

A Numerical Modeling Study for Determining the Optimal Depth of Grout Curtain in Foundation and Abutments of Karun 4 Dam

Some experimental relations have been developed for determining the grout curtain depth, but these relations cannot be applied to any dam with any geological condition. Therefore, the effect of the grout curtain depth on seepage through foundation and abutments of each dam should be studied separately. To examine this parameter in Karun 4 dam, the numerical modeling method was applied using FLA...

Semi-Analytical Modeling of Electromagnetic Performances in Magnet Segmented Spoke-Type Permanent Magnet Machine Considering Infinite and Finite Soft-Magnetic Material Permeability

In this paper, we present a semi-analytical model for determining the magnetic and electromagnetic characteristics of spoke-type permanent magnet (STPM) machine considering magnet segmentation and finite soft-material relative permeability. The proposed model is based on the resolution of the Laplace’s and Poisson’s equations in a Cartesian pseudo-coordinate system with respect to the relative ...

New Insight on Deformation of Walnut/Ceramic Proppant Pack under Closure Stress in Hydraulic Fracture: Numerical Investigation

This study is an attempt to investigate the mechanical behavior of proppant packs deforming under compression loading. A generalized confined compression test (CCT) was simulated in the present study to investigate the deformation of walnut/ceramic proppants against compression. In this way, the CCT was simulated using ABAQUS explicit code. Unlike ordinary CCT, we obtained permeability of compr...

Numerical modeling of hydraulic fracturing in carbonate rocks of Bangestan reservoir

Hydraulic fracturing is used in the oil industry in order to increase the index of production and processing in the wells whose efficiencies have been dropped due to a long-term harvest or the rocks around the wells are of low permeability. Since the hydraulic fracturing operation is costly, it is of special importance to the project managers to determine the pressure required for hydraulic fra...
